Despedimos en unos días al 2011. Ha sido un año intenso para los coordinadores del Programa EDICE, desplegado entre la administración de los manuscritos enviados luego del V Coloquio Internacional en Barranquilla, Colombia, y las gestiones realizadas para la puesta en marcha de nuevos proyectos de investigación y publicación. En este aspecto, cabe destacar la labor realizada por la Secretaría de Publicaciones del programa a cargo de la Dra. Nieves Hernández Flores, cuyos coordinadores administraron más de 30 manuscritos en un proceso de revisión doble a ciegas por pares internacionales. Los manuscritos aceptados serán publicados en el primer cuatrimestre de 2012, con precisiones que daremos a conocer a la brevedad. El trabajo de revisión por pares continúa con el llamado auspiciado por la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León y su Facultad de Filosofía y Letras para la segunda publicación centrada en aspectos del fenómeno de la cortesía en México.

Por otro lado, no queremos dejar de anticipar la noticia acerca de la puesta en marcha de un proyecto de publicación con acceso abierto e indexación en las principales bases de datos internacionales. Esta iniciativa tiene como objetivo consolidar la presencia, ya avalada por casi diez años de trabajo ininterrumpido, del Programa EDICE como un foro de promoción internacional de la producción científica en español y sobre el español. Este proyecto ha recibido recientemente el apoyo académico y financiero de Vetenskapsrådet (The Swedish Research Council / El Consejo de Investigación Sueco. Debido al volumen de trabajo que supondrá esta publicación durante el transcurso del año 2012  los coordinadores del programa edice nos vemos obligados a llevar la celebración del VI Coloquio Internacional a 2013. Este coloquio no será en Estocolmo, sino que se intentará realizarlo en un país latinoamericano a confirmar.

Finalmente, no podemos dejar de mencionar las  excelentes publicaciones que han sido producidas  por  nuestros colegas y colaboradores y que nos han sido enviadas para divulgación. Algunas ya están en nuestro sitio y otras lo estarán a breve plazo. Los logros que se reflejan en estas obras, constituyen los pilares científicos que justifican la existencia de esta comunidad académica de la que con orgullo formamos parte.

Les deseamos un feliz fin de año y un próspero 2012. Este nuevo año nos traerá  propuestas renovadas para intercambiar nuestra producción científica, las cuales abrirán, estamos seguros, nuevos caminos por explorar.

En ellos se abordan las diferentes normas que cada grupo social, situación interactiva o tipo de texto impone. De esta manera, hay aportaciones sobre sus manifestaciones en la sintaxis, la prosodia o la semántica que se basan en la lengua de los medios de comunicación, en interacciones orales en ámbitos coloquiales o formales como, por ejemplo, los debates parlamentarios, y en discursos del español peninsular y americano. El rigor científico presente en todos ellos hace que sus conclusiones supongan un verdadero avance en el diseño de las relaciones entre lenguaje y sociedad.

Felicitamos a ambos coordinadores por este logro tan importante.

La publicidad se vale del lenguaje para acercarse al público. Los distintos medios de comunicación, radio, prensa y televisión, tienen sus propios códigos y la publicidad debe adaptar sus usos del lenguaje a los canales comunicativos. En televisión, por ejemplo, la descortesía ha alcanzado el grado de espectáculo; en las revistas femeninas el uso del usted busca acercarse a una determinada clase de mujer; y la autocortesía de los locutores radiofónicos puede influir en el oyente. Los discursos publicitarios de las cuñas de radio de diferentes países americanos: Argentina, Chile, Perú, Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica y México permiten hacer consideraciones panhispánicas sobre la expresión de la cortesía en los microdiscursos de las cuñas en español, americanas o españolas. Estas y otras claves son analizadas por el grupo de Investigación Cortesía y Lingüística de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. A las aportaciones del equipo, que lleva años trabajando en este campo, se han sumado los trabajos de especialistas de universidades españolas y extranjeras para ofrecer una panorámica actual, profunda y amplia de la cortesía y las técnicas lingüísticas de persuasión publicitaria.

1st International Pragmatics Conference of the Americas and the 5th International Conference on Intercultural Pragmatics

October 19-21, 2012, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, USA

The goal of the joint conference is to promote both theoretical and applied research in pragmatics, and bring together scholars who are interested in different subfields of pragmatics (philosophical, linguistic, cognitive, social, intercultural, interlanguage, etc.). Three parallel sessions will be held on the following topics:

(i) Pragmatics theories: neo-Gricean approaches, relevance theory, theory of mind, meaning, role of context, semantics-pragmatics interface, explicature, implicature, speech act theory, presuppositions, im/politeness, experimental pragmatics, etc.

(ii) Intercultural, cross-cultural an societal aspects of pragmatics: research involving more than one language and culture or varieties of one language, lingua franca, technologically mediated communication, bilinguals’ language use, intercultural misunderstandings, effect of dual language and multilingual systems on the development and use of pragmatic skills, etc.

(iii) Applications: usage and corpus-based approaches, pragmatic competence, teachability and learnability of pragmatic skills, pragmatic variations within one language and across languages, developmental pragmatics, etc.

“Experimental and Empirical Approaches to Politeness and Impoliteness” is an international and interdisciplinary conference dedicated to how perceptions of politeness and impoliteness are shaped through language and affect the utterance interpretation process. The conference, the first of its kind in the US, will take place in Urbana, IL, August 29-31, 2012.

“Empirical and Experimental Approaches to Politeness and Impoliteness” is the third in a series of international conferences dedicated to Linguistic Impoliteness and Rudeness (LIAR III) and the first in a series of im/politeness symposia organized annually since 2005 to be held outside Europe.

The specific aims of the conference are to:

- provide a platform for the presentation of the latest findings in im/politeness research, with an emphasis on innovative approaches that build on the methods of the sciences;
- promote dialogue between scholars based in different parts of the world who are carrying out im/politeness research;
- help identify areas of high priority within im/politeness research and help forge new international collaborations between linguists, social psychologists and cognitive scientists that will address these areas;
- heighten the profile of im/politeness research among scholars and graduate students in the United States, and the Midwest in particular, by showcasing its theoretical and methodological reach, and potential for cross-disciplinary engagement.

This collection of essays on Spanish pragmatics can be understood in its broadest sense in Iacob L. Mey’s words as «the study of the conditions of human language use in a societal context.» The essays, which can be read independently from one another, revolve around three key areas within the Anglo-American school of pragmatics: speech acts, conversation, and politeness as sociocultural manifestations of communication.
The first part of the book emphasizes the study of politeness in different Spanish-speaking communities, paying special attention to the realization of polite speech acts and their cross-cultural and cross-linguistic implications, as well as the face-work that interlocutors conduct in casual conversations and other communicative settings. The second part expands the topic of politeness strategies to the study of new contexts (such as echo questions and conversational repairs) and addresses other language phenomena that can be best explored from a pragmalinguistic perspective, such as evidentiality, mitigation, contrastive emphasis, and topicality and discourse salience.
The examples (with the exception of a few literary quotes) proceed from naturally occurring data or were collected through questionnaires, and represent a wide range of colloquial «Spanishes,» from Peninsular to Latin American, from monolingual to bilingual, and from native to heritage to second language learners’ varieties. The empirical nature of Aspects of Spanish Pragmatics will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in the use of Spanish for real-life communicative interactions, as well as in the topic of intercultural communication and the teaching of authentic language to students of Spanish in the United States.
